His Holiness is moving through” in Viaggio: the travels of Pope Francis ” by helicopter, plane, truck and papemobile. A crowd always follows and creates the articulate public speaking opportunities that populate this film. However, the documentary is mainly driven by a maudline reverence from the director Gianfranco Rosi, whose collage approach does not produce the meditative experience he desires.

The opening text of Rosi’s film tells us how the pictures here are mostly compiled from archival material. This detail becomes known when the film moves from one big papal visit to the next, using images of his public speeches and sometimes letting them unfold for long periods of time. Because as valuable as his words are – “dignity is contagious”; “war is madness”; ” Together we have to say no to hatred— – your manipulation here puts you at the center of disappointing attitudes. It is a valuable food for thought of one of the most revered public figures in the world, but the eloquence of the document is all too often limited to this.

“In Viaggio” becomes a world tour of humanitarian crises without a larger narrative plan. His subjects are all the topics that Pope Francis is talking about in the current clip; when you put all these scenes together, it makes a much less poignant statement. The film oscillates between different visits and years—from Chile in 2018 to Kenya in 2015 to Israel in 2014- and shows how Pope Francis is close to the starry-eyed locals, while a background is full of enthusiastic fans. It can be powerful to see the calming power of Pope Francis when he embodies and preaches non-denominational peace. We are watching these people live a day that they will never forget.

But over time, what should be a mediative experience becomes numbing, especially since inserted scenes of historical suffering are told in a shaky rhythm. Rosi shows us a place like Japan in 2019 and then returns to black and white images after the devastation caused by the atomic bomb. It’s a heartbreaking sequence in itself that feels projected in the way of watching and walking this documentary, which has only its most sacred intentions to recommend it.
